    • 13:15 - 14:00 The role of antibiotics on animal welfare and strategies to prevent antibiotic use in United States organic dairy herds
In the United States, antibiotics are prohibited in all organic livestock production and animals treated with antibiotics are required to leave the herd. This rule can have a negative effect on animal welfare if antibiotic treatment is withheld from sick animals just to maintain organic status. Antibiotics have an important role in balancing animal welfare and organic status on dairy farms, and practicing prevention and organic approved treatment strategies may reduce prolonged suffering and overall antibiotic use.
