Dr Victor Verwaal, MD, associate professor, oncology surgeon, is specialized in colorectal surgery, HIPEC and advanced pelvis and abdominal rectal cancer.
He is trained as a surgeon in the eastern part of the Netherlands. In 2000 he moved to the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital were he combined his clinical job with research in The Netherlands Cancer Institute. His randomized trial comparing systemic chemotherapy to cytoreduction with HIPEC followed by systemic chemotherapy was published in JCO in 2003 and updated in 2008 (Annual Surgical Oncology). This study has been, and still is, the cornerstone of the acceptance of the HIPEC treatment. After this study Verwaal set up HIPEC units in other hospitals in the Netherlands and internationally. He has been a guest surgeon on all continets of the world and has given lecture in even more places.
Currently he works in the Aarhus University hospital to boost the HIPEC there and ther advanced cancere team. Besides being a surgeon he is en associate professor at the Aarhus university. His main research is again peritoneal surface oncology and surgical advanced cancer treatments.
