Reinventing Jobs in Copenhagen

A 4-Step Approach for Applying Automation to work

How, when, and where to bring automation into organizations are difficult questions for leaders.
Ravin Jesuthasan and John Boudreau explain that they struggle for answers because they’re thinking in terms of entire jobs, not in terms of variations of tasks within jobs.
They argue that automation calls for a reexamination of what a “job” actually is: how it is structured, how it should be reconfigured, how it should be managed, and how it can be optimized. Going beyond the questions of how and to what extent automat ion wi l l replace traditional jobs, Jesuthasan and Boudreau present a four-step work-automation framework — deconstruct, optimize, automate, and reconfigure—by which leaders can proactively “rebundle” work in their organizations.
