John AcresImmediate Past President, RTPI
John Acres is Immediate Past President of the Royal Town Planning Institute. He was RTPI President in 2018. John was born in London but moved to the Midlands in 1988 and now lives with his partner, Jenny, in Northamptonshire. He has 3 grown up children.
John has operated for the last 5 years as a self-employed planning consultant under the company name of Acres Land & Planning Ltd operating mainly but not exclusively for private clients, especially landowners, house-builders and developers but also has public sector clients and undertakes training and seminars in conjunction with the RTPI and other bodies.
For 3 years previously, John was Residential Business Development Director for Turley one of the largest planning consultants in the UK. Prior to that he worked for developer Catesby Estates, Redrow Homes and the House Builders’ Federation. His earlier experience was in Local Government in London where he was employed for over 15 years in the former Greater London Council and later at the London Borough of Southwark involved in major Area Improvement schemes in London.
John holds an MSC in Urban and Regional Planning from London University and a Diploma in Town Planning. He was twice Chair of the RTPI (West Midlands region) in 1999 and again in 2007 and edited their Regional RTPI newsletter (‘Tripwire’) for over 15 years. John was President of the Planning & Development Association from 2011-2013. During 2005/06, John served on the Government’s Affordable Rural Housing Commission. He was a founder Board member of the South Shropshire Housing Association, serving for 8 years and was previously a local Parish Councillor in Warwickshire.
