    After graduating from The Free University of Berlin Bettina completed a fellowship, a rotating equine internship and a large animal internal medicine and an emergency and critical care residency (alternate track) in the United States. Since 2005, she has been a member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and attained her PhD from the University of London in 2008. Since 2008 Bettina has been employed as a first a lecturer and then senior lecturer in equine medicine at the Royal Veterinary College.
    The lecture will discuss management of medical iatrogenic emergencies that can occur in every day equine practice including rectal tears, intra-arterial and paravenous injections and problems arising with nasogastric intubation. Emergency first aid, continued patient management, prognosis and communication with clients will be addressed. Measures to avoid iatrogenic complications will be included, where appropriate.

      The important milestones of normal pregnancy, foaling and the immediate postpartum period will be discussed from a veterinary perspective. The reasons for their importance in relation to the development of disease will be highlighted.
      14:30 - 15:15 Neonatology in the Field
      The lecture will summarise recognition and diagnosis of commonly encountered conditions in neonatal foal and discuss their treatment under ambulatory conditions.
      15:45 - 16:30 Neonatology today – what is possible – what is not
      Recent developments in neonatology will be discussed and the influence of new research findings on advanced neonatal care, therapy and prognosis will be highlighted.
